The COLD Hard Facts About Cryotherapy and Weight Loss

It seems like something out of a futuristic Sci-Fi movie… Stripping down to the bare essentials and jumping into a chamber that will basically freeze the surface of your skin, all in the name of weight loss. However, there’s a reason that Cryotherapy is fast becoming the go-to treatment for star athletes and celebrities all over the world.

Whole Body Cryotherapy works by passing liquid nitrogen vapor over the skin, causing the surface temperature to drop dramatically. This triggers an immune response in the body resulting in reduced inflammation, decreased pain and an increase in metabolism, something that could help with your weight loss goals.

That’s right, Whole Body Cryotherapy can be a fantastic calorie burner. After a 3-minute Cryotherapy session, your body will burn up to 800 calories, that’s the equivalent of 45 minutes of rigorous cycling! However, it should be noted that sessions of Whole Body Cryotherapy alone won’t make you lose weight. These treatments should be used as an aid in weight loss, to be used alongside a healthy diet and exercise regime.

So, how does it work? Due to the freezing cold nitrogen vapor, your brain triggers your body’s survival mode. This results in the secretion of adrenaline and an increase in blood and oxygen to your skins surface, causing a boost in immunity, rapid cell renewal and an increase in metabolism. As your body is tricked into thinking it’s beginning to freeze, it will start breaking down that stubborn brown fat in order to raise your core temperature. Using a large amount of energy like this to heat up the body is what burns those pesky calories.

Following your treatment, for around 8 hours, your body will keep on burning around 2000−3300 Kilojoules of energy. So you can see why, in conjunction with a healthy diet and active lifestyle, Cryotherapy can help you with your weight loss goals.

Not only will Whole Body Cryotherapy assist in burning extra calories, but it will also improve sleep and boost your energy, leaving you in the best possible mindset to do your usual exercise routine. Also, while working out, our bodies can become tired and even injured. As Whole Body Cryotherapy decreases inflammation and pain caused by sports and rigorous exercise, it can help get you back to your workout much quicker, and make those rest days so much more beneficial.

BUT! …..

If you’re looking for the magic bullet to miraculously lose weight – then CRYOTHERAPY IS NOT FOR YOU!  Some Cryotherapy clinics (rather, some general clinics too) are making pretty astounding claims that you’ll lose weight through Cryotherapy and their modality. These are pretty radical claims. Obviously, there is no such thing as a magic pill. There are no shortcuts!

If you’re looking for an AID in your weight loss plan, to work in conjunction with your current exercise routine and nutrition plan, then Whole Body Cryotherapy is definitely the way to go!! We’ve witnessed hundreds of clients successfully lose their weight, reduce their stress and completely change their lives. What is a Cryofacial and Does it Hurt?

Cryofacials are a Cryogenic treatment, developed by the highly talented Dr Kuehne in Los Angeles.  The process uses a controlled stream of liquid nitrogen vapours, which is passed over the entire face and neck. This below zero stream comes from a probe like ‘Cryowand’ and is used to ‘freeze’ the outer layer of skin, leaving your complexion looking brighter, more vibrant and with fewer fine lines.

As soon as the vapour passes over your skin there is an instantaneous tightening of the skin’s surface and pores, which effectively fills in fine lines and wrinkles. However, it’s underneath the skin that the true magic happens. The Cryofacial instantly triggers a steady dilation of blood vessels and lymphatic capillaries, allowing the blood to carry more oxygen, nutrients and even collagen to the skin’s surface. This quick rush of goodies causes the production of collagen to increase, leaving you with a truly glowing and even complexion.

If you suffer from puffiness around your eyes or red patches on your face and neck, having a Cryofacial could be the answer to all your problems. The liquid nitrogen vapour relaxes muscles and reduces swelling and inflammation, which can drastically reduce puffiness and uneven skin tones.

The whole process only takes around 10 minutes, and unlike most other facial treatments, there’s no irritation or reddening afterwards. You can step straight out of the clinic and onto the red carpet after a Cryofacial treatment, which is what a lot of celebrities do.

Does a Cryofacial hurt?

Many people worry that they won’t be able to handle the freezing cold air, or that the process will be extremely painful. The Cryofacial process, when done by a professional, won’t cause any discomfort at all. Most people describe the experience as extremely relaxing and soothing, likening the sensation to having a hand fan blowing on your face on a hot summer’s day. Many Cryofacial experts have actually had clients fall asleep in the chair during the process as they were so relaxed.

There’s also absolutely no chance of freezing or damaging the skin in any way. The stream of liquid nitrogen vapour is passed over the surface of the skin in a gentle circular motion and is never left in one place long enough to cause any damage at all.

What are the long-term effects?

From the second you get out of the chair, you’ll notice a dramatic change in your skin’s appearance. Fine lines will be reduced, and your skin will look healthy, vibrant and glowing. However, when used on a regular basis, Cryofacials can have a wide range of amazing Benefits.

  • Increased elasticity of skin
  • Brightens dark spots
  • Evens skin tone
  • Treats skin problems such as acne and eczema
  • Restores Firmness and radiance
  • Lightens scars
  • Reduces wrinkles and fine lines

Your Cryotherapy Questions Answered!

As Cryotherapy is still widely unknown amongst the general public, it’s normal that you will have a few questions. Many people are hearing amazing things about Cryotherapy and wish to book their first treatment, but a few niggling thoughts and questions are holding them back.

Well, that’s why we’ve created this FAQ, to give you the answers to all the questions you may have.

Once you step into the Cryosauna, 100% safe cryogenic Nitrogen vapour will be passed over the skin. This lowers the surface skin temperature by around 30-50 degrees in under 3 minutes. This drastic change sends a signal to your brain which causes it to stimulate your body’s regulatory functions. Your central nervous system is boosted, anti-inflammatory molecules and endorphins are released, the amount of blood carried in your red blood cells increases and your body purges toxins.

Absolutely! Nitrogen is non-toxic and makes up 78% of the air we breathe every single day. While in the Cryosauna your head is completely outside, so you will feel free and be able to breathe the room-temperature air during the process. You will also be provided with protective gloves socks and slippers to keep your fingers and toes warm during the process.

Of course, it’s completely safe to exercise both before and after. In some cases, it’s actually recommended by your Cryotherapy attendant to do some light exercise after your treatment to help your skin warm up faster. Exercising before your whole body Cryotherapy treatment you will experience a quicker recovery thanks to the anti-inflammatory response, and increased energy.

Every client will experience a high release of endorphins after each treatment which is a hormone that gives you energy and makes you feel happy. People suffering from inflammation or pain will feel relief almost immediately. The effects of each full body Cryotherapy will last 6-8 hours after treatment. Many clients also experience a metabolic rate increase and can be expected to burn 500-800 calories the day of their treatment.

During your Cryotherapy treatment, your body isn’t actually being frozen, it’s simply been given the feeling of being cold. The air passed over your skin is completely dry and safe, and will only lower the temperature of the skin’s surface. However, if at any moment you wish to step out of the Cryosauna you are free to do so and your experienced attendant will be there to help.

No! Ice baths can last up to 20 minutes, are extremely painful and can ultimately damage the skin. Cryotherapy is a completely dry process, so the skin is never penetrated by the cold. Cryotherapy also only lasts up to 3 minutes and the effects are much greater. Cryotherapy will actually improve your skin’s condition over time and will reduce inflammation much quicker than an ice bath.

Although full body Cryotherapy is completely safe, as with any treatments, there are some cases where it is advisable not to undergo the process. It’s advisable not to enter a Cryosauna if you are pregnant, have severe hypertension, arrhythmia, unstable angina pectoris, recent or acute myocardial infarction, a cardiac pacemaker, cardiovascular disease, venous thrombosis, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, recent or highly acute cerebrovascular accident, uncontrollable seizures, a fever, tutor disease, severe anemia, symptomatic lung disorder, a recent infection, cold allergies, are under 18 years old without parental consent, or have an acute kidney or urinary tract disease.

What to Expect From Your First Cryotherapy Treatment

Although Cryotherapy is perfectly safe and extremely good for your health, the idea of entering a chamber at -110°C can be a little daunting. In this post, I will set your mind at ease by walking you through each step you will experience in your very first Cryotherapy treatment.

The very first step on your road to better health and faster recovery is to complete a health screening form. This will make sure there are no underlying health issues which could stop you from being able to proceed with the treatment.

After your form has quickly been assessed, you will proceed to the changing area where you will be given complimentary gloves and slippers to keep your toes and fingers protected. You should also wear a swimsuit or shorts (and sports bra for women) when using the Cryotherapy chambers.

Once you are primed and prepped for your treatment to begin, a fully certified Cryotherapy staff member will give you a rundown of all the benefits, process and safety precautions to follow during your treatment. This allows for an optimal experience and optimum results.

Your skin temperature will then be measured and you can finally proceed to step into the cooling chamber. Once inside the chamber, your assigned Cryotherapy specialist will close the door and begin the process.

There is absolutely no actual freezing involved in a Cryotherapy chamber. Cold, dry air is passed over your body which causes your skin temperature to drop between 30 and 45 degrees. This is where the magic happens, your immune and central nervous systems kick in, and your body begins the process of healing.

The feeling of the cold air moving over your body may feel unusual, but it won’t hurt at all. Unlike ice baths, Cryotherapy uses completely dry air, so it doesn’t cause pain or damage the skin.

During your time in the chamber, there will be a member of staff monitoring the whole process, and the doors of the chamber never lock, so you can step out at any time.

After 2 to 2.5 minutes your treatment will be over, and you can step out of the chamber. At this point the member of staff attending you will record your skin’s temperature again, to better assess your progress and tailor your next treatments to your body’s exact needs.

As soon as you step out of the Cryotherapy chamber your skin will feel cold to the touch and endorphins will be racing around your body by this point. After around 10-15 minutes your body will return to its normal temperature. To speed up this process some clients may be asked to do around 2-3 minutes of light cardio.

Even after you leave the studio, your body will continue to heal and rejuvenate, and you will burn around 500-800 calories throughout the day of your treatment.

Who Uses Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is quickly becoming one of the most popular forms of pain and relaxation treatments throughout the celebrity world.

The innovative and somewhat unusual method of using sub-zero temperatures to treat a whole host of physical ailments is now being used all over the world and is giving some outstanding results.

Cryotherapy was originally developed to help star athletes with inflammation, muscle tiredness and even whole body recovery after a long game or sporting event.

World-class NBA athletes such as Kobe Bryant and LeBron James swear by this all-over Cryotherapy method. They regularly use it to elevate inflammation and pain. The undefeated boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. uses Cryotherapy before and after every fight, to assist with faster recovery time and to lower his pain levels.

Cryotherapy can also be used as a localised treatment to treat isolated injuries. This method is commonly used in the lower back, shoulder, ankle or knee. The team of professional dancers on ‘Dancing With The Stars’ and NBA teams like the Phoenix Suns often use this spot therapy version of Cryotherapy to heal more specific injuries.

Recently, celebrities such as Christina Aguilera and renowned speaker Tony Robbins have taken a shine to a few other benefits of Cryotherapy. Tony is said to use this freezing treatment to reduce stress, improve his sleep patterns and to help his body function optimally throughout the day.

Christina Aguilera takes advantage of the amazing full body healing and anti-ageing properties that come with exposure to extreme cold. This popular singer even uses Cryotherapy to facilitate in her workout regimes to help her lose weight and keep her body in fantastic shape.

Can I use Cryotherapy?

Don’t worry, you don’t need to be an A-list celebrity, star athlete or world famous singer to reap the benefits of Cryotherapy.

Is Cryotherapy Painful?

Is Cryo Painful? Would have to be the most commonly asked question. Closely followed by another common statement… “I don’t like the cold”.

The short answer is, no. Whole Body Cryotherapy is not painful at all. Though it’s not uncommon for people to feel a sensation in a part of their body that is in pain, inflamed or perhaps sore from a tough training session.

Cryo can sometimes just be uncomfortable. Especially the first session as it’s such a new and unbelievable concept. The toughest part we’ve found here at Polar Bare Club is our clients’ mindset. Especially our clients’ first session. Most of the time the few minutes prior their treatment is worse than the actual treatment itself. (First timers that is, our regulars nail it every time!) Almost always when we start a three minute -150°C treatment, we’re asked: “is this it?!”

Cryotherapy can be such a strange experience to explain. Your hands are covered in warm woolly mitts. You’ve got thick socks on. Gorgeous Ugg slippers on your feet. Your head pops out of the Cryosauna. You talk to your friends or to the Cryotherapist as normal, yet clearly, our body is cold. It truly is such a hard feeling to articulate.

Not everyone has a hard time giving Cryo a try, whilst some may swear and curse at us (with a beaming smile of course) there are a great number of our amazing clients who don’t even flinch – not a bother at all. It’s truly amazing to see the vast effect it has across all our clients.

Does it get easier with every treatment?

The other great thing about Cryotherapy is that, just like anything we start and stick to, our clients are well and truely acclimatised to the cold and it rarely bothers them. This can take up to 3-6 visits generally, from our experience.

We often have a chuckle with our regulars, when reminiscing on how tough they found their first session, to now how easy and fast their sessions are.
